How to Choose a Domain name PDF Print E-mail

1) Short & Simple:
 shorter name is always sweet:)

It would be better to choose the domain name not ot exceed 8 to 10 characters as much possible, anyhow the exception is, by considering the uniqueness of the domain you choose, you acn go for a still longer name (when you donot find a short domain name)

Example for short Domain name:  http://www.domain.com

Example for a long descriptive domain name:  http://www.yourdomainname.com  etc etc

2) Uniqueness:
having something unique "word", will always help you get better rankings in the search (when keywords used are directly related to your domain name)

3) Research:
Try researching on a nice word (that presents your concept of the site),

4) Abbreviated Forms:
you can use numbers & known abbreviated forms too,

Ex: businessforyou.com

You can use this way:  business4u.com

5) Possible inconveniences to users:
Try to check & ensure the domain name donot go too long (if the domain is too long, then, users may feel trouble when using the email ID's created on that domain for typing too long ID's every time they like to check/compose emails while entering details for authentication);)

6) Extensions:
leave the game of extensions (as extensions are being increased, even though you have more chance of getting domains (of popular sites with another extension), I feel it is a better practice to avoid them and choose a different domain name.
what I mean is, UNIQUENESS is something which is to be given Much Prominence and one thing we should never forget is the RADEMARK problem, which may encounter someday causing loss financially and in other ways too. Keeping this in mind, I strongly suggest to avoid registering a domain with a different extension of a popular domain name.

This is out of my personal experience, I reiterate on choosing UNIQUE Domain Names for your company/organisation's website, anyhow, I never say, you have to accept it and it is just my view while I respect other's right to present their views in a more better way

7) Regional:
Based on your website's target audience (local with in country or international), you can have a choice between (country specific extensions or generalised extensions like .com, .net, .org, .com.in, .com.uk etc) which all depends on the field and category into which they were classified.
One more thing about country secific Extensions is, you need to provide lot of documentation and have less flexibility (in choosing a name for your DOMAIN Name of your company/organisation), while getting generalised extensions like .com, .net, .org etc etc are more flexible to get registered based on the type/ purpose of yor company/organisation.

--------------
Problems with choosing multiple domain names:

Even though having multiple domains looks fair, if everyone wants to register multiple domains, just think of how it will be....

1) Incase, if we find, traffic coming almost equally on all domains, (distributed in all channels), what we will do then????

2)Onething i like to remind is, to really judge things, firstly all the domains to be propagated well equally and then you have to analyse from the website logs, which one users got well accousted to come through, and then leave out the rest of the domains (if you donot want to spend more on these domains), ofcourse, you can still continue by renewing them over the years.

3)When you stop renewing some domains (in the propagated ones as said in the previous case), and someone who wants to start similar things can easily takeover the left out domains (unrenewed domains after the renewal period), and can give a fair competition to you in the future (as some of your customers or users will go to that if they got accousted to reaching your site in that domain name)

Note: This is an important reminder of possible problems you have to think about before going for multiple domains.

4)The only thing that you can do to retain all registered domains is, to continuously renew them to see to it that they point to your website

5)Some people think that they will get good search engine ratings if they have multiple domains, which is true in only some cases, as SEO (search engine optimisation) is something more and a wide topic and cannot be simply accomplished by just registering multiple domains with different extensions or by duplicating content on multiple domains.
---------------

Hope you all got my point know:)

these were some of the basic things to be considered, and I feel, you can get a better domain name,

Hope it helps:)

Cheers
